India boosts drone prowess in strategic pact with Israel

India has recently strengthened its military capabilities with the procurement of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) from Israel, according to sources from different news agencies. The move comes as part of the fourth tranche of emergency procurements approved by the Indian government, with each branch of the military acquiring two Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has selected the Heron Mk2 from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). These contracts have been finalized, and deliveries are anticipated early next year, as independently confirmed by multiple defense sources.

The acquisition of these Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) is expected to significantly enhance India's reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities. The drones are set to collaborate with combat helicopters, a move described by a defense source as a "game-changer in the third dimension."

Manufacturing of the Hermes 900 and Hermes 450 is carried out in partnership with Adani Aerospace and Defence at the Adani Elbit UAV Complex in Hyderabad. The carbon composite aerostructures for these drones are produced locally, minimizing potential delays due to external factors.
